Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Lexis Czumak-Abreu, a 27-year-old electrician in New York state. But now I work as an electrician. I did an apprenticeship with an electrician company in 2015 and kept up electrician jobs on the side when I needed money for my family. I became a full-time electrician instead of continuing in medicineI could no longer work as a personal trainer under the COVID-19 restrictions. I'm happy where I am and excited to move into working with even higher voltage in the future.

By Ana ManoSAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazilian federal prosecutors are asking a judge to unwind a 2017 deal handing control of pulp and paper company Eldorado from Brazilian firm J&F to Paper Excellence Group, citing restrictions on foreign land ownership. In 2017, J&F Investimentos agreed to sell Eldorado Brasil Celulose to a unit of Paper Excellence at an enterprise value of 15 billion reais ($3.0 billion). Brazil imposed limitations on foreign land ownership in the early 1970s, but spotty public records have left uncertainty about how consistently those restrictions are enforced. In December, Brazil's rural land agency Incra issued a recommendation saying the deal would effectively give Paper Excellence control of 14,486 hectares of rural land owned by Eldorado. Paper Excellence said Incra's opinion was not legally binding, and a judge has not ruled on the prosecutors' motion.

HOUSTON (AP) — Hard-throwing reliever Josh Hader and the Houston Astros finalized a $95 million, five-year contract on Monday. Hader will get a $19 million salary in each of the next five seasons, none of it deferred. He gets a full no-trade provision and would receive a $1 million bonus for winning the Mariano Rivera/Trevor Hoffman Reliever of the Year Award. Houston reached the agreement three days after announcing reliever Kendall Graveman will miss the season after right shoulder surgery. Because Hader turned down a qualifying offer, San Diego will receive an extra pick in next July’s amateur draft.

Sultan al-Jaber, president of the UNFCCC COP28 climate conference, speaks during day two of the summit on Dec. 2, 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Sean Gallup | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesDubai, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — A fight over the future of fossil fuels has been thrust into the global spotlight at the COP28 climate summit. "Unabated" fossil fuels are largely understood to be produced and used without substantial reductions in the amount of emitted greenhouse gases. "[It is] important to say that more fossil fuels equal more loss and damage, so these two issues are actually quite intertwined." Notably, at last year's COP27 conference in Egypt, more than 80 countries supported a fossil fuel phase-out commitment in the final agreement.

"Since then, the United States has turned ambition into action." On the sidelines of the conference, the United States also unveiled new measures to curb emissions of the powerful greenhouse gas methane from oil and gas operations. That awkward coincidence underscores one of COP28's most contentious questions: Can the world's response to climate change involve continuing use of fossil fuels? Harris told the conference that the United States supports phasing out of "unabated coal" use, but she did not mention other fossil fuels. "We're in a context in which we need to reduce production of fossil fuels and ... we need to be on a path of lower consumption.

A couple protect themselves with an umbrella for high temperatures, as they wait before the Taylor Swift concert, following the death of a fan due to the heat during the first day concert, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, November 18, 2023. The police will investigate whether entertainment firm Time for Fun (T4F) (SHOW3.SA) committed the crime of endangering human life or health. Ana Clara Benevides fell ill last Friday, on the first night of Swift's Rio tour in Rio, and later died in hospital. Police have also launched a separate investigation into the cause of Benevides' death, which has not yet been concluded. The firm's CEO Serafim Abreu acknowledged on Thursday that the concert organizers could have taken "alternative actions" to help fans cope with the extreme heat.

REUTERS/Pilar Olivares/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSAO PAULO, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Organisers of the Brazilian leg of Taylor Swift's "The Eras Tour" acknowledged on Thursday they could have taken more measures to help fans cope with the extreme heat they faced last week in Rio de Janeiro. T4F's (SHOW3.SA) statement follows a last-minute postponement of Swift's performance last Saturday in Rio due to record breaking heat after a fan died in the sweltering conditions a day earlier. "We recognise we could have taken some alternative actions in addition to all the others we have done," T4F Chief Executive Serafim Abreu said in a video posted on social media. On the first night of Swift's tour in Rio last Friday, 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides fell ill and later died in hospital. The extreme conditions led the U.S. pop star to postpone her concert the following day just two hours before she was to go on stage.

Abreu was suspended Saturday by MLB senior vice president Michael Hill, a day after the incident. The reliever appealed, allowing him to pitch in Game 6, and the hearing was held Monday before John McHale Jr., a special assistant to baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred. He was pleased with the resolution since it allows him to pitch this postseason despite the suspension not being reduced. “That was kind of what I was hoping for when I didn’t use him in a down game two innings yesterday,” Baker said. Abreu, García and Baker were ejected.

HOUSTON (AP) — Texas Rangers slugger Adolis García set a record for RBIs in a postseason series with 15 in the AL Championship Series and extended his home run streak to four games after going deep twice in Game 7 against the Houston Astros on Monday night. García stretched his RBI streak to six games with a single in the first inning of the pennant-deciding game. He's also the first player with RBIs in six straight games within a postseason series. Cruz had 13 RBIs for the Rangers in the 2011 ALCS against Detroit, which was the last time they went to the World Series. HOUSTON (AP) — Houston reliever Bryan Abreu has appealed the two-game suspension he was given by Major League Baseball for what the league said was intentionally throwing at Adolis Garcia of the Texas Rangers during Game 5 of the AL Championship Series. Because of the appeal, Abreu will be eligible to pitch in Game 6 on Sunday night, when the Astros can advance to the World Series for a third straight season with a win. MLB said Saturday that all six umpires decided Abreu’s pitch was intentional. Abreu, who was also fined for the incident, is one of Houston's top relievers and has a 1.42 ERA in seven appearances this postseason. The defending World Series champion Astros were again felled by a subpar start from Framber Valdez and lackluster play at home. But the Rangers got some insurance from an RBI double by Garver with one out in the eighth off Abreu. Josh Sborz walked Alex Bregman to start the Houston eighth and struck out Alvarez before José Abreu singled with one out. Abreu singled on a grounder to right field before Tucker grounded into a force out that left him out at second and sent Alvarez to third. The Dodgers' two biggest stars, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, combined to go 0-for-8 in Game 3 and finished the series 1-for-21 as a duo. Both struck out while representing the tying run in the eighth inning against Arizona reliever Kevin Ginkel.
